SCOPE

Climate change impacts on the human health are one of the most important environmental concerns in the XXI century. Many studies have established a link between changing climate conditions and diseases (SIAM I, 2002). In order to assess this link we started in 2006 the research project: Past, Present and Future Health Impacts of Extreme Events in Portugal. This project is funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and one of its objectives is to make the assessment of past and current population health vulnerability to: periods of extreme thermal stress; periods with high air pollution levels associated with extreme temperatures and to forest fires and also to the indirect health impacts of drought periods. Another objective is to make the assessment of the possible increases in mortality and morbidity associated with future episodes of extreme weather in Portugal, in particular those associated with heatwaves.
